With new full-length lesson plans now available for download on the Resources page of our website, creating custom curriculum has never been easier!
For those of you who read our weekly emails, you know that we continue working tirelessly to add new resources to our website every week. This not only includes our printable materials, but also data sheets, new student activities, and now additional lesson plans! While the majority of our curriculum still resides in the Lesson Library within your student’s profile, we are actively in the process of adding a new set of Functional Life Skills Lessons to the resources section of our website. Lessons like Crossing the Street, Calling 911, and Using Public Transportation, and many more are now available in PDF format for download on the Resources page under the Lesson Plans category. While these lessons are not yet available in the Lesson Library, and thus cannot be directly added to the student’s plan the way our other lessons are, you can use Rethink’s Custom Curriculum Feature to add these lessons to your student’s plan and start collecting data.
To begin teaching our new Functional Life Skills Lessons to your student today, follow these 5 easy steps!
1. Download Lesson Plan from the Resources Page
Once logged into your account, navigate to the resources page by going into one of your student’s programs. Once on the resources page, select the Teaching Materials Category and then select Lesson Plans. From here you will see a complete list of our additional lesson plans for download.
Click on the lesson plan you’d like to download and a PDF of the plan will open up in a separate window. Once downloaded, the file, named with the lesson title, can be found in your computer’s downloads folder. You can also save the lesson to your desktop or any other folder on your computer.
2. Add New Lesson to Custom Curriculum
Once you have downloaded the lesson plan, navigate back to your account page and scroll down to the bottom of the screen where you will see a panel titled Custom Curriculum. From here you can select the curriculum category where you’d like to place the lesson within the Lesson Library (in the case of the Functional Life Skills Lessons, you can select the Daily Living category) from the drop-down and then click the “Add New Lesson” button.
A fillable form will then open up. Fill out the form with the information from the lesson plan you have downloaded and then upload it by selecting the “choose file” button and selecting it from your folders.
You can simply copy the goal and objectives from the lesson plan and paste into the fillable fields or write your own custom IEP goal and objectives. When you are done filling out the form, select the “Save” button and the lesson will be available in the Lesson Library for all of your students.
3. Add the Custom Lesson to your Student’s Learning Plan
Now that you have added the custom lesson to your custom curriculum, go to the program for the student you’d like to teach the lesson to and navigate to the Lesson Library. The lesson will now be available in the lesson library under the selected curriculum category, in this case Daily Living.
Scroll to the bottom of this page to find the Custom Curriculum section. You will find your custom lesson here, indicated by a small orange icon. To add the lesson to the student’s plan, select the check box next to the lesson title and then click the “Add to Plan” button. The lesson will then appear in your student’s Learning Plan.
4. Customize your Lesson and Begin Recording Data!
Now that the lesson is in your student’s learning plan you can begin customizing the lesson further and adding targets or you can go straight to Data Express and begin recording data for the custom lesson.
To view the lesson in the Learning Plan you can select the “View Current Plan” button at the bottom of the Lesson Library or you can select the “Learning Plan” link from the top navigation. Once in the student’s Learning Plan, select the “Go to Lesson” button next to the lesson title. This will take you to the Lesson Specific Page.
From here you can customize the goal and objectives to align with this specific student’s IEP and/or begin adding teaching targets to the objectives. To do so simply select the “edit” button beneath the objectives and a fillable form will appear.
Now you are ready to begin recording data on your custom lesson. You can either select the “Record Data” button at the bottom of the screen, or select the “Data Express” link from the top navigation. Your custom lesson will appear as an Ability Lesson in Data Express. You can also edit objectives as well as add and edit targets for your custom lesson from here.
